Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has updated the list of specializations in the MBA CBSE 2019 pattern. Pune University offers a total of 9 specializations for the MBA programme. Students can select Major and/or minor specialization as per their choice

MBA Specializations in Pune University

Below is the updated MBA Specializations in Pune University for 2019 pattern. These specializations are applicable for academic year 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22.

*Student can choose these specializations as a Minor specializations only.

MBA Major & Minor Specializations

Major Specialization

You can select major specialization from 1 to 5 from the above list. For example, you can select Marketing Management as Major Specialization. You can not select major specialization from 6 to 9. For example, you can not select International Business as Major Specialization.

Minor Specialization

You can select minor specialization from 1 to 9 from the above list.. For example, you can not select International Businessas a major specialization.

Major Minor MBA Specialization Combinations:

This is a bit complex and technical but still, it’s our responsibility to make you aware of everything related to Pune University MBA specializations.

For a Major Minor Specialization combination, the learner shall complete COURSES:

  • Major Specialization – Courses: Total 9 (4 Subject Core courses and 5 Subject Elective courses)
  • Minor Specialization – Courses: Total 4 (2 Subject Core courses and 2 Subject Elective courses)

For a Major Minor Specialization combination, the learner shall earn CREDITS:

  • Major Specialization – Credits: Total 22 (12 Credits from Subject Core + Minimum 10 Credits from
    Subject Electives)
  • Minor Specialization – Credits: Total 10 (6 Credits from Subject Core + Minimum 4 Credits from Subject Electives).The 10 credits of the Minor specialization shall be from a single specialization, out of which 6 credits shall be mandatorily earned through the Subject Core Courses.

Important Note about MBA Specializations

Choice of MBA Specialization in Pune University:

  1. Minor specializations shall be offered in the second year (semester III and IV only). (3 choices – RABM or PHM or THM) Courses for the Minor specialization shall be taken up in the second year only (in either Semester III or Semester IV or in a combination of Semester III and IV).
  2. The Major specialization of a student shall be determined by the Subject Core (SC) courses and the Subject Elective (SE – IL) courses chosen in Semester II. All courses (Subject Core (SC) courses and the Subject Elective (SE – IL) courses) chosen in Sem II shall belong to the same specialization.
  3. The SIP may or may not have a Functional Focus. The student may take up a SIP in his/her intended area of specialization or in any other functional area of management. Ideally, the SIP should exhibit a cross-functional orientation.

Rights of Institute regarding MBA specializations offering

  • Institutes may offer only select specializations based on industry needs, faculty strength & competencies, student demands, employability potential, etc.
  • Institutes may not offer a specialization if a minimum of 20% of students is not registered for that specialization.
  • It is not mandatory to offer all the specializations and all the electives. The decision of the Director shall be final in this case.
  • Institutes may stipulate additional criteria of minimum SGPA / CGPA, a number of backlogs, expectations about specific graduation discipline for students who wish to take up a specific specialization / specific major-minor combination. Such criteria may also involve the potential employability criteria for a particular specialization / Major + Minor specialization combination.

Rights of Students regarding MBA specializations selection

  • Students can opt for a single specialization (i.e. Major Only 5 choices).
  • Students can opt for two specializations (i.e. Major + Minor Combination – 1(Major) + 7(Minor) choices). Please note that this major-minor specialization combination is optional. 
  • Students can opt for any Major Minor specialization combination, subject to institutional norms and guidelines, issued from time to time.
  • A student opting for Major Minor specialization combination shall opt for Foundation Courses / Enrichment Courses / Alternative Study Credit Courses only in lieu of Generic Elective (GE – IL) Courses.

FAQs

How to earn a Major specialization MBA degree?

  • The learners shall complete 6 Subject Core courses (2 each in semester II, III, IV) and 7 Subject Elective courses (2, 3, 2 each in semester II, III, IV respectively).
  • In this case, the learner shall be awarded an MBA Degree (Functional Area Specialization). For example, MBA (Marketing), MBA (Finance), etc.

How to earn a MBA Major – Minor combination specialization MBA degree in Pune University? 

  • The learners shall complete 4 Subject Core courses and 5 Subject Elective courses of Major specialization
  • The learners shall complete 2 Subject Core courses and 2 Subject Elective courses of Minor specialization.
  • In this case, the learner shall be awarded an MBA Degree (Functional Area Specialization Major + Functional Area Specialization Minor). For example, MBA (Marketing + Finance), etc.

Who is eligible for additional MBA specialization in Pune University?

A student who has earned an MBA with a major Specialization may enrol for additional specialization after passing out the regular MBA program.

Who is not eligible for additional MBA specialization in Pune University?

Students opting for major-minor specialization combinations are not eligible to enrol for additional specialization.

Which MBA specialization is available to select as an additional specializations in Pune University?

Additional specialization can be pursued in the major specialization only (Marketing, HR, Finance, Operations or Analytics).

Is there any subject exemption for additional MBA specialization in SPPU?

Such students will be exempted from appearing for all the generic core and generic elective courses. Such students shall have to appear for the subject core and subject elective courses of the additional specialization that they have opted for.
